This subject provides an overview of the field of intellectual property law. It focuses on the challenging and dynamic area of copyright law. It explores and traces the key areas of patent law, confidential information, trademarks, as well as specialist topics including designs law.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Critically evaluate the fundamental legal principles under Australian law and international obligations relating to copyright, breach of confidence, patents, designs, plant breeder’s rights, passing off and trademarks
2.
Apply and evaluate legal principles relating to the protection of intellectual property interests
3.
Apply principles of law to solve problems and advise on legal disputes involving intellectual property rights
4.
Outline and evaluate the policies underlying the protection of intellectual property interests at national and international levels
5.
Evaluate current and emerging issues and reforms relating to the intellectual property, including the protection of Indigenous Peoples knowledge, expressions and genetic resources, the distribution of material on the internet, and biotechnology.
